DURING WORLD WAR II, I was in Army Air Corps technical school at Truax Field in Madison, Wis. Our barracks leader was a scholarly-looking man who, when it was time for lights out, would entreat us, "Fellows, will you please quiet down?" We would continue to talk, but eventually would comply.

When a group of wrestlers put on a show for us at the base gymnasium, our barracks leader to our surprise showed up to compete. After bouncing his opponent around for a few minutes, he pinned him to the mat.

Back at the barracks that night, he said, "Fellows, will you please quiet down?" And there was instant silence.
