Gary Gladwin looks over his wrecked property where he stored a 1937 Chevy, in Thurman, Iowa, Sunday, April 15, 2012. A large part of the town in the western part of the state was destroyed Saturday night, possibly by a tornado, but no one was injured or killed. Fremont County Emergency Management Director Mike Crecelius said about 75 percent of the 250-person town was destroyed. (AP Photo/Nati Harnik)

I can not understand how you can even buy home insurance in some states in the US. Other than the huge costs involved, these events must absolutely rip the heart out of small communities like this.

If this happened in Australia the new housing codes would make it almost unafordable to be able to rebuild in these places in Tornado alley.

I have often wondered whether people can get "Tornado or flood insurance" in the US.

Imagine having a house with a mortgage of $1/4 million and gets flattened only to find the house insurance won't cover it. It must be heartbreaking.

Does your house insurance cover your home and car for bush fires Spike?

Like all insurance, you would have to read the fine print on your policy, very carefully.

e.g. If my car is parked on my property, damage is covered under my home insurance, but if it is in motion it is covered by my Comprehensive vehicle insurance unless someone else hits it in another vehicle, in which case it is covered by their Comprehensive insurance or Compulsory Third Party insurance if they do not have it, and I'll bet it doesn't end there, with such considerations as acts of god and deliberate self destruction etc.

Once vehicle gets to be more than a few years old, it gets to where it's not worth insuring at all, with the exception of Compulsory Third Party, which is part of your registration fee.

Then of course you have to be aware of idiots (often drunk) driving unregistered and uninsured vehicles which leaves you right up the creek. The Insurance company just doesn't want to know you.
