The Defense Department gave Lockheed Martin the green light to continue work on a $6.1 billion cruise missile program that has been hindered by cost overruns and performance shortfalls.
The Pentagon's chief weapons buyer, Defense Undersecretary John J. Young Jr., certified that conditions required by law had been met for the restructured Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM) program. The missiles are to be used by the Air Force and the Navy to destroy well-defended targets, theoretically with a single missile per mission.
