The only Army officer charged with criminal offenses in connection with the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal was arraigned at Fort McNair in Washington.
Lt. Col. Steven L. Jordan, 50, a reservist from Fredericksburg, did not enter a plea during the hearing. He is charged with eight offenses, including cruelty and maltreatment of detainees, making false statements and obstruction of justice. If convicted on all counts, he would face 22 years in prison.
A military judge agreed to hear a defense motion next week seeking dismissal of the charges on the grounds that the Army waited too long to order his court-martial. The defense says that violates a provision of the military code requiring a court-martial within 120 days of charges being filed.
