PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo.—U.S. Northern Command says it is establishing a search and rescue unit as Hurricane Ike heads toward the Texas coast.
NorthCom said Wednesday that the 331st Air Expeditionary Group, which would be responsible for search and rescue operations, will be based at Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base in Texas.
Ike is expected to blow ashore early Saturday somewhere between Corpus Christi and Houston, with winds that could top 131 mph.
NorthCom is helping evacuate medical patients. It also is providing aircraft to help with search and rescue efforts, if needed, and with moving personnel and supplies.
NorthCom provides homeland defense and supports civil authorities.
