BAGHDAD - Nine Iraqi police officers were killed Friday when insurgents
detonated a series of bombs and fierce fighting erupted in the northern city
of Mosul, a police official told AFP.

Three car bombs and three roadside bombs were triggered in the city, while
mortar shells were fired at police posts, he said. "Up until now nine police
have died, including a major, but it's still going on," he added.

The senior officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, denied reports on
Arab-language television that the city's police chief had been killed but
said that the dead major had been the leader of a brigade.

"The situation is still volatile, and clashes are continuing in parts of the
city," he said, adding that a vehicle curfew had been imposed from 10 am
(0600 GMT) Friday until 6 am on Saturday.

Mosul, a restive northern city 370 kilometres (200 miles) from Baghdad, has
a majority Sunni Arab population and significant Turkmen and Kurdish ethnic
minorities. It is often the scene of violent attacks on security forces by
enemies of the Iraqi government and its US ally.
