The 2nd Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast (NMWC) Regiment was formed in 1999, by an amalgamation of The 2nd Battalion (Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast), RNZIR, 3rd Field Ambulance, RNZAMC, 32 (E) Battery, RNZA and the Territorial elements of 3 Field Squadron, RNZE, 3 Signals Sqn, RNZSigs, and 3 Logisics Battalion, RNZALR, thus inheriting history that went back to the commencement of the New Zealand Army. The 3rd Battalion was formed by the amalgamation of the 3rd Auckland (Countess of Ranfurly's Own) and 15th Northland Regiments in 1965. In turn these Regiments trace their lineage back to the early volunteer militia of the 19th Century. For example, the Auckland Regiment was initially formed as the 1st Auckland Infantry (Countess of Ranfurly's Own) Battalion from amalgamation of the Victoria Rifles, New Zealand Native Rifles, Auckland Rifles, Gordon Rifles, Avondale Rifles and Newtown Rifles in 1898. The 4th Battalion (Otago and Southland) Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment has been traced back to the 27th February 1860 when the Dunedin and Invercargill Militia Battalions were established. Their Motto is

6th Battalion (Hauraki) RNZIR was formed on 9 July 1898 as the 2nd Battalion (Hauraki), Auckland Rifle Volunteers. Their Motto is Whakatangata kia kaha “Acquit yourselves like men, be strong.”
