The 2nd Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast (NMWC) Regiment was formed in 1999, by an amalgamation of The 2nd Battalion (Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast), RNZIR, 3rd Field Ambulance, RNZAMC, 32 (E) Battery, RNZA and the Territorial elements of 3 Field Squadron, RNZE, 3 Signals Sqn, RNZSigs, and 3 Logisics Battalion, RNZALR, thus inheriting history that went back to the commencement of the New Zealand Army. Regimental Motto, ONWARD. source: http://army.mil.nz/default.asp?CHANN...mental+History

The 3rd Battalion was formed by the amalgamation of the 3rd Auckland (Countess of Ranfurly's Own) and 15th Northland Regiments in 1965. In turn these Regiments trace their lineage back to the early volunteer militia of the 19th Century. For example, the Auckland Regiment was initially formed as the 1st Auckland Infantry (Countess of Ranfurly's Own) Battalion from amalgamation of the Victoria Rifles, New Zealand Native Rifles, Auckland Rifles, Gordon Rifles, Avondale Rifles and Newtown Rifles in 1898. In Northland a similar amalgamation took place in 1911. Their Motto is Sisit Prudentia Ever Prudent. source: http://www.army.mil.nz/?CHANNEL=PART...hland+Regiment

The 4th Battalion (Otago and Southland) Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment has been traced back to the 27th February 1860 when the Dunedin and Invercargill Militia Battalions were established. Their Motto is
Kia Mate Toa - Fight unto Death. source: http://army.mil.nz/?CHANNEL=PART%2DT...TAGO+SOUTHLAND

6th Battalion (Hauraki) RNZIR was formed on 9 July 1898 as the 2nd Battalion (Hauraki), Auckland Rifle Volunteers. Their Motto is Whakatangata kia kaha “Acquit yourselves like men, be strong.”

7th Battalion (Wellington (City of Wellington's Own) and Hawke's Bay) RNZIR (7 WnHB) has arisen from the amalgamation of the 5th Wellington Regiment and the 9th Hawke's Bay Regiment in 1964. Their Motto is Kia Toa “Be Brave.” source: http://army.mil.nz/default.asp?CHANNEL=WNHB&PAGE=WNHB

I am disappointed that they merged the 5th into the 7th though as 5th Battalion has a unique history only shared by one other Battalion in the Commonwealth.

The same has happened in Britain with infantry regiments with hundreds of years of battle honours merging with other regiments, The Middlesex Regiment merged with the Queens Regiment among others. The Middlesex Regiment was my granddads regiment during WW1, their nickname was the "Diehards," with an amazing list of battle honours on their colours. I joined D company the 5th Battalion Territorial Army Queens Regiment which was originally part of the Middlesex Regiment, during both world wars they fought hard and suffered high casualties.
