President Bush has reportedly been warned to expect incoming British Prime Minister Gordon Brown to announce troop withdrawals from Iraq within 100 days of taking office.
Bush recently discussed with a senior adviser how to handle the expected loss of Washington's main ally in Iraq, according to The Sunday Telegraph newspaper.
"There is a sense of foreboding....We expect a gesture that will greatly weaken the U.S. government's position," one senior official said.
Britain is currently cutting its Iraq force from 7,100 troops at the start of the year to 5,500 - but there is no official timetable for full-scale withdrawal.
