North Korea threatened South Korea with destruction after Seoul's top military officer said his country would consider attacking the communist nation if it attempted a nuclear attack.
"Our military will not sit idle until warmongers launch a pre-emptive strike," said an unidentified military commentator with the North's official Korean Central News Agency. "Everything will be in ashes, not just a sea of fire, once our advanced pre-emptive strike begins." He also said Pyongyang would ban South Korean officials, including military officers, from crossing the border.
Pyongyang has been at odds with South Korean President Lee Myung Bak since he took office last month. Lee has said progress in efforts to halt the North's nuclear program was a prerequisite for further large investment and aid. North Korea test-fired short-range missiles off its coast Friday.
