Topic: Modernized Tank T-72M1M

Andrey Kokshin

During July of this year on polygon "prospector" near Nizhny Tagil, was demonstrated the version of the modernization of tank T-72M1. To zavodchane they upgraded the machine with another complex of the fire control. T -72M1 became test run-in table of new ideas - according to the representatives of plant approximately half of innovations on the modernized version goes in the standard assembly of T-90.

T -72M1 "modernized" is proposed for export, the versions of the plant modernization of the machines of othercountries located in arsenal so are examined. Is given below comparative TTKH of tanks T -72M1 and T -72M1"modernized".
Modernization of tank T -72M1

Based on materials of the official catalog of exhibition Russian ExpoArms 2002

The Russian version of the modernization of tanks T -72 increases their key characteristics: firepower, protection, mobility, command controllability, preserving at the previous level unsurpassed reliability.

The new automated control system of fire makes it possible to conduct fire from the gun at any time of twenty-four hours on the long range, including on the move, as to spotter, so to the commander of machine.

The protection of tank is increased due to the installation of the reactive armor of new generation, the improving level protection from defeat not only by cumulative, but also by armor-piercing- subcaliber projectiles. On modernized T -72M1 are established the new automatic systems of fire extinguishing and protection of crew from OMP.

Armament: 125- mm smooth-bore gun 2A46M, the complex of the controlled armament of 9K119 "reflex" and the closed anti aircraft machine gun installation.

Basic sight of spotter -combined thermal-vision, the stabilization of the field of sight - independent variable in two planes.

Digital ballistic computer and automaton of target tracking are established on the tank

Weird looking turret, looks like a missile trap, surely it should slope the other way? Is this comparable to the czech and polish modernisation programs?

They might have the same strategic as Krauss-Maffei Wegmann has with their Leo 2A5+ where the armor is sloped in two ways instead of what GE has done with M1A1+ which is only sloped in one direction. And the shape on the Leo 2A5+ is not a shot-trap. A round won't be directed down into the tank hull, it looks as if it would but it wont because of the design

We had this discussion before about the Merkava Mk 4s turret, which is alos sloped both ways:

and its the same on the front of the Leopard 2A6:

and I think that if Russian, German and Israeli tank desighners are doing it, it must be good for somthing.

Its ERA (i hope), there bricks of explosive that when a missile/shot hits the tank the block explodes, directing the blast away from the tank. Modern missiles though such as MILAN 3 have tandem warheads, where the first part causes the brick to explode, then the second part carries on through to the metal armour.

The T-72M1M is supposed to have 95% of the capability of the T-90. Since the T-90 is nothing more then an upgraded T-72 (T-72BU), it's probably true.

Modern APFSDS rounds do not deflect. In fact, they "bite" into the armor and turn to penetrate armor. This makes sloped armor not as useful as in past decades.

Well a lot of "bad guys" would still be using old ammunition as their primary ammo. So it's still very important.
