ANKARA -- Turkey's military says its warplanes and artillery have struck Kurdish rebel targets inside northern Iraq.
The military says that the jets on Tuesday bombed the Hakurk, Avasin-Basyan and Zap areas in northern Iraq and the targets were later shelled by artillery units. The military describes the operation as a success.
It is the latest of a series of Turkish strikes against rebel hide-outs in northern Iraq, where the guerrillas have staged hit-and-run attacks on Turkish targets for decades.
The Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, has been fighting for self-rule in Turkey's southeast since 1984.
