The Pentagon is doling out handheld lie detectors to Army troops in Afghanistan in a bid to uncover hidden Taliban and al Qaeda operatives, according to a report.
So far, the Army has bought 94 of the $7,500 machines, called Preliminary Credibility Assessment Screening Systems.Overall, the Pentagon has spent $2.5 million on the program.
The Defense Department says the device will primarily be used to screen local police officers, interpreters and other forces who have access to US military bases in the country, according to MSNBC.com.
It would also be used to identify suspects following assaults, like roadside bombings.
