RALEIGH — The ground beneath houses and a school used by Camp Lejeune military families is clear of chemical contamination, federal environmental regulators said Thursday.
Base officials notified residents of nearly 900 homes in July that testing was under way to determine whether a plume of chemicals had seeped through the ground from a nearby Superfund site to contaminate water supplies and send vapors into buildings.
Camp Lejeune officials in 1987 closed several wells contaminated with solvents from a nearby cleaners. Government figures estimate that up to 1 million people were exposed to the chemicals.
Studies have linked the chemical exposure to leukemia, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and other serious illnesses.
