The visit also afforded the Ship the opportunity to exercise it’s right of Freedom of Entry through the City, a right that the ship had exercised on many previous occasions since it’s first on the 20rh February 1982. On that first occasion the Ship had received its Charter, but on this, the final entry, the Charter was returned to the Lord Mayor of Adelaide, Mr Michael Harbison.

HMAS Adelaide will enjoy a six day port visit to Adelaide, South Australia, reinforcing the ties held between the ship and her namesake town.

The visit will provide an opportunity for the Ship’s company to say farewell to the people of Adelaide prior to decommissioning of HMAS Adelaide, early 2008.

The ships company of HMAS Adelaide march down King William Street in Adelaide. HMAS Adelaide is being decommisioned shortly.

During her commissioned lifetime HMAS Adelaide has enjoyed numerous overseas deployments including the Persian Gulf, Northern Asia, South East Asia and the Pacific. HMAS Adelaide was one of the first RAN ship’s ordered to the Persian Gulf following Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990. HMAS Adelaide is also the ship that rescued stricken yachtsmen Tony Bullimore and Thierry Dubois from the Southern Ocean in January.

The ship's company of HMAS Adelaide march past on the dock of HMAS Stirling. HMAS Adelaide is being decomissioned after 27 years of service. The ship is a guided missile frigate and has served in both gulf wars (op Damask and Catalyst) and has been deployed on Op Slipper in 2002. HMAS Adelaide also saw duty in many peace keeping and peacetime operations world wide.

The body of Lance Corporal John Gillespie is brought home from Vietnam by members of 1 CSSB after he went MIA in 1971 when the UH1 Huey he was flying in was shot down over Southern Vietnam. He was a medic from the 8th Field Ambulance and was trying to evacuate a wounded ARVN soldier near the Long Hai hills. There is currently a campaign on to find then bring home Australian's who are missing in action.
