The police in northern Japan arrested a 22-year-old United States serviceman and charged him with sexually assaulting a woman, in the latest in a string of such cases involving the American military that have angered the Japanese. The serviceman, stationed at Misawa air base at the northern tip of Japan’s main island, was accused of groping the woman on the street, a police spokesman said. In addition, a United States marine faces a court-martial on charges of kidnapping and raping a 14-year-old girl on the island of Okinawa in February, and four marines from a base in southwest Japan face courts-martial over the rape of a Japanese woman last year.
