A court in Rome dropped a murder charge against a U.S. soldier who killed Italian intelligence agent Nicola Calipari outside the Baghdad airport in March 2005.
Army National Guard Spc. Mario Lozano was being tried in absentia. Lozano says he fired at a car carrying Calipari and Giuliana Sgrena, a kidnapped journalist who had just been freed, after the driver ignored warning shots. The court ruled it lacked jurisdiction.
Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said a U.S. military probe found the death a "tragic accident."
