I WAS A CAPTAIN in the Air Force, and my wife was a sergeant. One evening at the officers club, we sat down to dinner and noticed a new couple at our table. The woman wasted no time introducing herself as a captain's wife, emphasizing her husband's status. She explained at length how miserable their last base had been because they "had to live next door to those enlisted people!"

"You think that was bad," I retorted. "I have to sleep with one."
