Iran has developed a 2,000-pound (900 kg) “smart bomb”, official media quoted a Defense Ministry statement as saying on Wednesday, in the latest announcement from Tehran about progress regarding military hardware.

The guided bomb, named Qased (Messenger), was developed by specialists within the ministry and is now operational, IRNA news agency said, adding it could be dropped from F-4 and F-5 jets.

Iran still uses planes, such as the F-5, supplied by the United States to the government of the former shah of Iran, who was a close US ally. Mohammad Reza Shah was ousted in the 1979 Islamic revolution, after which Washington cut ties with Tehran.

The two countries are embroiled in a deepening standoff over Iran’s nuclear program, which the West suspects is aimed at making atom bombs, a charge Iran denies.

Iran often says it has built new arms or upgraded weapons but rarely gives enough details for analysts to determine their capabilities. Although much of Iran’s weaponry is outmoded, analysts say Iran has become proficient at modifying such arms.

Defense Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar said last year Iran had designed the Qased bomb but that it had yet to be tested. He said only a limited number of countries possessed the technology of “smart and guided weaponry”.

The United States says it would prefer a diplomatic solution to the nuclear row, but has not ruled out military action. Iran has threatened to hit back at US regional interests if attacked.

Third party

I think they had help or at the very least outside input if I had rate or guess where it came from it would be:
China
Russia
French

The other possibility is it might be from a third party from one or more of the above.

What does that have to with Iranian regime developing a weapon?

Are you saying that Iranians living in the States are collaborating with the regime in Tehran?

:m16shoot:

Can you guarantee that none of those guys are bad eggs?
I believe there may have been the odd case or two where a Korean American spied for one of the two Koreas.
This sort of stuff is bound to happen.

No... Actually there are really bad bad guys but chance of being a bad guy and work for Uncle Sam's military is relatively LOW.

But yeah, there was an Iranian-American nuke engineer who stole some data and went back and never re-appeared.

again Iranian-American community have sacrificed at least 5 soldiers in the war in Iraq and they are more loyal to the States though

Don't have to be employed by Uncle Sugar to learn how to make a smart bomb. In fact you could work for a mining company and develop a smart bomb guidance system. Dual use technology is watched closely when being exported but its use within our own borders is wide open.

Exactly. Or you could be one of the various companies tied in with projects that build components for smart weapons.
Tech is tech.
Iran could also send over or recruit scientists in the U.S. as well. It's not far fetched to think that Iran would pay a reasonably high level scientist to go work in the U.S. specifically to steal information.

Nice looking Bomb..... wonder why it has a US Ordnance Designator on it, and English wording on the Wings.... and the 2nd and 3rd pic is not the same piece of Ordnance as the 1st and 4th, the third really showing the Ordnance being smaller than a 2000 LB bomb, unless the Iranians are really huge humans, besides it clearly being Photoshopped, though the words "DO NOT TOUCH WINDOW" are not Airburshed out.

Poor engineering perhaps, maybe each wing only fits in one position,.... even the control surfaces are numbered.

Then again maybe the bloke who paints the lettering is paid by the letter?
