Well my cell phone doesn't have a 14 inch monitor, full size keyboard and all the bells and whistles of a PC.

True. Frankly WIFI Routers arent that expensive, a easier solution is to simply a get better router. You can buy a top of the line home router for $100 and that gives you 300-400 feet. I would wager the cell phone/salad bowl trick although free would not do the same. And if you need greater range that that, there are professional routers.
