Lebanon's political and military leaders struggled to pull the country back from a deepening civil conflict that has left at least 34 people dead in four days of violence between Iranian-backed militias and supporters of the pro-U.S. government. Prime Minister Fuad Saniora called on the army to restore law and order. Hezbollah fighters melted off Beirut streets as the government appeared to back away from the decree that sparked the confrontation. It had said it would sack the chief of airport security for alleged ties to Hezbollah and declared the group's private telephone network illegal and a threat to state security. The army sought to broker a face-saving solution by retaining the airport chief and promising to "investigate" the telephone network.
