ONE EARLY SPRING DAY, a general from another unit visited our Army Airborne group in Montana to observe paratroopers in a training exercise. The drop zone that particular day was a grazing area for cattle. The general arrived at the site shortly before the exercise was to commence and attempted to land -- to no avail. In the winter months, when land vehicles could not reach the cattle through deep snow, bales of hay had been dropped to the animals from a helicopter. So now, each time the general's helicopter neared the ground, the cattle ran over looking for lunch.
