Fact Check: Is COVID-19 manufactured in a U.S. military laboratory?
FURTHER INFORMATION
There are many claims and theories in this video but the main one is that the Covid-19 virus was created in the US Military facility Fort Detrick in Frederik, Maryland in the summer of 2019. It then spread (either accidentally or deliberately) to China. Covid-19 is a coronavirus, therefore genetically related to SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) and MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) which caused previous outbreaks in 2003 and 2012. It would therefore not be surprising if one of the many viruses that were listed for study at Fort Detrick was a coronavirus.

The video states that the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conspired to cover the outbreak of one of these lab-made viruses by attributing it to a ‘mystery vaping illness’. Whilst there is a mystery vaping illness that is puzzling researchers, more research needs to be done as vaping has only recently been widely adopted so the full health effects are still being studied.

As we have previously written, whilst the origin of Covid-19 has not been confirmed, it is thought to be a natural virus and according to the WHO probably has an ecological reservoir in bats. As the WHO says, ‘Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common in animals’. According to the WHO, ‘the first human cases of COVID-19 were identified in Wuhan City, China in December 2019’, and the virus is thought to have first originated in the live animal ‘wet’ markets where it may have jumped the species barrier to humans from a wild or domesticated animal.

Origins of Claim

FULL TEXT OF CLAIM
“What sort of theory could we look to put together from this. Well, you could say that it’s possible that the US military was doing experiments on animals using coronaviruses, and because they failed to follow protocols for containment, there was an outbreak nearby. The CDC found out about this, investigated what was happening, told the public it was the common cold and then shut down the lab… And then, either intentionally or accidentally, somebody who went to Wuhan was infected and spread the virus to Wuhan. There’s another side to this…The CDC is covering up so much information…there is evidence that this started in America.”

Everything I have read seems to indicate it is a natural virus, I think the idea that it is man made is being driven more by the politics between the US and China than anything factual.

I'm skeptical about the COVID-19 being "man made" It sounds more like another conspiracy theory.

I agree, I would be prepared to accept it was a natural strain that escaped from a lab accidentally than I would that it was an engineered virus released on purpose.

The nature is pretty good with providing with viruses without our interference.

Btw, I heard New Zealand doesn't have any cases of COVID-19 and you can begin to return to a normal life (more or less). I hope the New Zealanders don't find any new clusters of the virus now when you are open up the society

It has been 3 weeks since the last new case of C-19 and I think about 2 months since we had a case outside of a known cluster so we think we have it under control as long as we don't reopen the borders.
This said we are letting specialist people into the country, they are tested on arrival and quarantined for 2 weeks.

As of Monday at midnight we lifted all covid restrictions on everything but international travel.

That is great. We aren't allowed to go anywhere, but I don't blame the other countries for it. Our "approach" doesn't work.

Currently the government is fixated on opening borders with Australia but most Kiwis would prefer to open up to several Pacific nation's that are Covid free.

Here are our stats...

There is a risk when we begin to open up both domestically and internationally. This virus behaves differently than flu viruses. It appears in clusters and not sweeping through the population. However, I believe in putting countries in the lock down early to buy time when it is a novel virus.

The Chinese rather hard lock down worked pretty well to stop the disease from spreading further, but they could have been faster to admit they had an outbreak and not trying to hide it.

The main benefit in locking down the country early was that it didn't overwhelm the hospital system.

As for the Chinese they still suffer from the same issue Russia, North Korea and all those other dodgy dictatorships have is that they refuse to be open about these things even after the world discovers the problem.

I doubt any of those countries have told the truth about the number of infections or deaths.
