THEY HAVE one of the most dangerous jobs in the Army--and today they’ll head to the front lines for a fourth time since the war began.
Fifty soldiers from 10th Mountain Division’s elite Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team are leaving upstate Fort Drum for southern Baghdad today on a 15-month deployment.
Their mission: to defuse roadside bombs before they kill U.S. soldiers.
“This is one of the smallest career fields in the Army, but they probably have one of the largest impacts on our mission,” said Benjamin Abel, a spokesman for the 10th Mountain. “They make it possible for our soldiers to go out and do their jobs.”
Also heading to Iraq are about 1,100 soldiers from 10th Mountain’s division headquarters. Those troops will also spend 15 months overseas.
For the headquarters team, it’s the first deployment to Iraq. They served in Afghanistan twice, in 2003 and 2006.
“They’re not strangers to a tough environment,” Abel said. “We’re certain that they’re going to be successful in their mission.”
