The cost of a new Lockheed Martin ship will increase about $100 million, Navy leaders told a skeptical House panel. The cost of the first littoral combat ship will increase to about $350 million to $375 million from about $270 million, Navy officials said, though some expect it to be closer to $400 million.
The Navy ordered Bethesda-based Lockheed to stop building the second version of the ship last month after cost concerns emerged. While Lockheed officials continued to partly blame 14,000 technical changes, Navy officials told a House Armed Services subcommittee that the figure was closer to 800 to 1,000. But the service acknowledged that a lack of Navy oversight and the decision to begin building the ship before design was completed had contributed to the problems.
