Chalai denies he fabricated intelligence on Iraqi weapons

WASHINGTON, Nov 9 (AFP) - Iraqi deputy prime minister Ahmed Chalabi on
Wednesday derided claims he fabricated intelligence on weapons of mass
destruction to dupe the United States into an invasion as an "urban myth."

"We are sorry for every American life that is lost in Iraq. I regret every
loss of American lives," said Chalabi, as he took questions after his first
speech in Washington for two-and-a-half years.

Asked to comment on claims by critics that he funnelled erroneous
intelligence to the Bush administration that bolstered their case for war,
Chalabi told journalists not to "chase the headlines."

"This is urban myth, I refer you to page 108 of the Robb/Silverman report
that debunks this entire idea."

Page 108 of the report into the report on Iraq's weapons of mass destruction
reads that material provided by Chalabi's Iraqi National Congress (INC) had
"minimal impact" on the assessments of Saddam Hussein's capabilities before
the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Chalabi delivered his speech in the friendly confines of the American
Enterprise Institute (AEI), a conservative think-tank close to the Bush
administration, which includes many members who actively supported the drive
to war.

He had to run the gamut of a small group of protestors, chanting slogans and
holding a banner reading "Chalabi lied, innocents died," as he was driven to
a side entrance of the office block housing AEI in central Washington.
