BOSTON - Boston College hired Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski, a former BC assistant, to be its head coach and signed him to a five-year contract.
"He has respect for the outstanding tradition of BC football. He understands the mission of Boston College and the importance of academics to our program," athletic director Gene DeFilippo said in a statement. "He brings great personal integrity to the position and will continue to recruit scholar-athletes who will represent our institution with class. He has proven that he is an outstanding football coach, and his energy, enthusiasm and passion are contagious."
The offer was first reported Monday but confirmed by the school on Tuesday. Jagodzinski is scheduled to be introduced on campus Wednesday night.
Jagodzinski, 43, remained in Green Bay to prepare for the Packers' game Thursday night against the Minnesota Vikings. He was not available for comment, Packers spokesman Jeff Blumb said.
A Wisconsin native, Jagodzinski coached the Packers' tight ends for five years before spending two seasons with the Atlanta Falcons and then rejoining Green Bay this year for his first stint as an NFL coordinator.
Jagodzinski spent 14 years as a college coach at Wisconsin-Whitewater, Northern Illinois, LSU and East Carolina before serving as offensive coordinator at BC in 1997-98. In each season, the BC offense averaged more than 400 yards per game and allowed the fewest sacks in the Big East.
