The stars in the Dutch capital include Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai and Shah Rukh Khan.

The location of the awards changes annually to promote India's film industry around the world.

The ceremony will take place in the football stadium of Amsterdam Ajax, attended by thousands.

It has previously been held in Johannesburg, London, Malaysia and Singapore, which all have large Indian communities.

Small budget

At Amsterdam's airport hundreds greeted the arrival of Bachchan, who is seen as the biggest Bollywood star of recent years.

He was then received by Dutch prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende to mark the start of a three-day Bollywood festival.

India produces about 1,000 Bollywood movies a year, significantly more than Hollywood but on a much smaller budget.

Last year's big winner at the Indian Film Awards was Shah Rukh Khan, whose Kal Ho Naa Ho (Tomorrow May Never Come) won 14 awards.

Three of his movies are vying for top honours in the best film category this year.

Peace
