In my opinion, the best leader of the Soviet Union is Leonid Brezhnev. His leadership brought world attention with his country's accomplishments in outer space, athletic ability, and military power.

1917–22 Vladimir Ilich Lenin
1922–53 Joseph Stalin
1953–64 Nikita Khrushchev
1964–82 Leonid Brezhnev
1982–84 Yuri Andropov
1984–85 Konstantin Chernenko
1985–91 Mikhail Gorbachev

It would depend on whether you believe that Communism was a good idea or bad idea. If it was a good idea, then you'd prolly go with Lenin (despite all the bad things that he did). If its a bad idea, then Gorbachev was their greatest leader.

None of the above. They may be great leaders to some, but to those opposed communism, they were the leaders of a corrupt empire that threatened the world. Human rights violations, crimes against their own civilian populance, and numerous other atrocities litter the landscape of communism, and the world is better off without the Soviet Union.

Reason I'm saying Gorbachev is simple: He opened the door to the end of Communism.

If Communism was a good thing, then you'd have to choose Lenin for putting it into effect in Russia. If you believe that Communism was a bad thing, since he created the circumstances that lead to the end of Communism more than any other single person ... Gorbachev ought to be an obvious choice.

Economic nightmares occured largely under Yelsin's leadership. IMO, he pushed too hard at the wrong times. Had Gorbachev remained in power, Russia would have stood a better chance of gradually reverting to a Capitalistic system. Doing it quickly has proved disastrous. [/code]

IMHO That is a bit of an overstatement. As to the matter at hand:

Best for Commies:
Nikita Khrushchev

Best for the Russian people and the world:
Mikhail Gorbachev

A tad unfair and a tag that would only really apply to Stalin IMO.
