Belboy

Three people check into a hotel. They pay £30 to the manager and go to their room. The manager suddenly remembers that the room rate is £25 and gives £5 to the bellboy to return to the people. On the way to the room the bellboy reasons that £5 would be difficult to share among three people so he pockets £2 and gives £1 to each person. Now each person paid £10 and got back £1. So they paid £9 each, totalling £27. The bellboy has £2, totalling £29. Where is the missing £1?

They paid 30 all up

but should have paid 25 div by 3 = 8.33 per person

get back 5 so 5-2(bell boy)-1-1-1=0

they have paid 10 each and got back 1, but really they each paid 9.33

8.33+1x3+2=29.99

That is my attempt but I will pass this on to my wife as she is the number crunching guru in our house.

The correct answer is, there's nothing missing.

30(initial room charge) - 25 (real cost of room) = 5 (refund)

5(refund) - 2(bellboy's pocket) - 3(given to customers) = 0 missing

30 men paid
-5 to Bellboy
+3 to men
+2 to bellboy
___________
30 total

30 - 5=25
25 + 3=28
28 + 2= 30
