Australian Soldiers were and are the best,

Can I have a translation posted please? I didn't see any threats made towards either side in this line of posts and then all of the sudden everyone started defending themselves and attacking their opponents. I don't even know who the opponents are or what the argument is about! I'll look for an Australian-English to American-English translator, but I don't know how much luck I can find, it's hard enough to find an English-English to American-English translator.

You'll find it's an attitude they inherited from the British. That's what makes British infantry some of the best in the world - sticking up for their mates and loving a good ruckus seems to be imbedded in British culture.

This is precisely so, and in the past this is largely due to the regiments drawn still from localities. Here's a poem regarding the City of Glasgow( light Infantry) regiment in 1953. The regiment's official name is not used. I think it paints the picture.

ANY WAR WILL DO.

They march up Sauchiehall Street
And down the Broomilaw;
The Royal Highland Fleet of Foot
Are going to The War.

Some of them are criminals,
Some are lawyers too;
Some of them have iron fists
And some have Iron – Bru.
The pipes and drums lead onwards,
Just as in days of yore;
The Royal Highland Fleet of Foot
Are going to The War.

They don’t know where they’re going,
They just don’t know the score;
The fighting biting 74th
Are going to The War.

Will they no’ come back again?
You can bet your boots they will;
If there are punch-ups to be had
And black and tans to swill.
Then they’ll take whisky chasers
‘til they fall on the floor.
The Royal Highland Fleet of Foot
Are going to the War
And they’ll swear about the English
‘til they can swear no more
The Royal Highland Fleet of Foot
Are going to The War.

The guys in the poem were mostly National Service conscripts - everyone went in at eighteen - good guys and naughty guys, no difference.

The Aussies seem to have shown some balls against the Iranians when challenged by them during boat inspections.

Those Aussies have guts!!!

They're the best.

As a stridently Proud American, this is one subject/issue in which I can not find offense.

I've always preferred folk who honestly and forthrightly believe that they and theirs are the best and the brightest.

I love the the Diggers for one simple fact that counts above all to the Infantryman..........................................................................

They always have beer and if they don't have it they know where to find it! :drunkb:

And they can fight too! Check your ww1 & ww2 history.

Hmmm, interesting thread to be watching as an Aussie.

But really, this whole talk yourself up thing is pretty un-Australian. Pretty much it is expected of Australian men that they will go away and fight in jungles and deserts for a long time, and come back and neither have the time nor inclination to talk about it. Just get on with the job. It's nice to see plenty of patriotism here though.

The true issue

When you know you're any good, you don't have to tell anyone Bulldog. The best soldiers the world has ever known are the Ghurkas. Aussies tend to leave the bragging to the Yanks, but we're overlooking the true issue behind your comment.

Yanks don't care if any other country excels them at anything; their egos are only dented when they're told they're not the best at something.

There are a great many things other countries do better than us, but our egos can deal with it; can yours?

Who's the best BS belongs in school regarding sports or academics that can be actually judged.
Even then it changes from event to event.

I have the book and read it as a youngster. At the time I fell for all its jingoism and the mythology it had spread throughout its pages.
John Laffin is a great author and historion, but.
He is very blinded by the ANZAC mythology and has inspired many generations of Australians to believe that we are the best and the dastardly poms threw our men away!
Peter Wiers Gallipoli is a perfect example of the LAffin school of thought.
I much prefer Les Carlyon and even Peter Thompsons works on Australian military history.

Every country has its good soldiers and its worthless soldiers. The latter is easier to find than the former. This is really a ridiculous claim here.

It is laways embarrassing to see someone claim the title to being the best!!

Natural pride in your country, service, specialisation and regiment mean that you want them to be the best, but it isn't always so.

A bit of rivalry is great, when it turns nasty then it is not.

I just say hats off to all servicemen and women, conscripted or not, whatever country - I'l still share a beer with you - especially if you're buying.

BTW The RLC ROCKS
