Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, suggested Wednesday that the United States planned the 9/11 attacks so it could invade Afghanistan and Iraq.
"A building collapsed, and they said that 3,000 people had been killed but never published their names," Ahmadinejad said. Under this pretext, the United States "attacked Afghanistan and Iraq," he said.
Islamist terrorists, most of whom were Saudis, hijacked airliners and crashed them into the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon. Another jet crashed in Pennsylvania. The names of all those who died were made public.
Israeli opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu compared Ahmadinejad to Hitler and likened Iran's nuclear program to the threat the Nazis posed to Europe in the 1930s.
"Where that regime embarked on a global conflict before it developed nuclear weapons, this regime is developing nuclear weapons before it embarks on a global conflict," he said.
