This is interesting to me because of the old throw back to prop driven aircraft from WW-II, the USAF AT-6B Texan II's are setup as trainers but could be with some changes be used the way Brazil, Colombia, use Supertucano. This could be another small market to break into I guess but think their more of a market as trainers.

I wonder how the two compare to each setup with ground to air weapons? For Iraq I think there be useful teamed with helicopters I think but Iraq needs fast movers as well.

Like it or not Iraq's like the Saudi's in the past need protection from Iran since they share a direct border.

I'll post the article I found

WASHINGTON, December 10, 2008 – On Dec. 9, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of a possible Foreign Military Sale to Iraq of 36 AT-6B Texan II Aircraft as well as associated support. The total value, if all options are exercised, could be as high as $520 million.
The Government of Iraq has requested a possible sale of 36 AT-6B Texan II Aircraft, 6 spare PT-6 engines, 10 spare ALE-47 Counter-Measure Dispensing Systems and/or 10 spare AAR-60 Missile Launch Detection Systems, global positioning systems with CMA-4124, spare and repair parts, maintenance, support equipment, publications and technical documentation, tanker support, ferry services, personnel training and training equipment, U.S. Government and contractor engineering and logistics support services, and other related elements of logistics support. The estimated cost is $520 million.
This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a friendly country.
The proposed sale of these aircraft, equipment, and support will enhance the ability of the Iraqi forces to sustain themselves in their efforts to bring stability to Iraq and to prevent overflow of unrest into neighboring countries.
The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region.
The principal contractors are:
Hawker Beechcraft Corporation, Wichita, Kansas
Pratt & Whitney Corporation, Quebec, Canada and Bridgeport, West Virginia
Martin Baker in Middlesex, United Kingdom
Hartzel Propeller, Piqua, Ohio
Canadian Marconi, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma
L-3 Vertex, Madison, Mississippi
There are no known offset agreements proposed in connection with this potential sale.
The proposed sale will involve multiple trips to Iraq involving many U.S. government and contractor representatives over a period of 15 years for program management, program and technical reviews, training, maintenance support, and site surveys.
There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale.
This notice of a potential sale is required by law; it does not mean that the sale has been concluded.

Well they have better loiter time and sometimes the low speed is what you want. Very much like the A-1 skyraiders.

prop planes

I watch a show on the military channel about two weeks ago about the A-1 skyraiders, what an aircraft.

I think for the Texan II if might be it's third sale. #1 US, #2Morocco, the pre-sale to the Vipers, and didn't #3 Israel order them as well?

Can you see them with rocket pods, cannon pods, and wing tanks? The one draw back to them is the speed in which they can exit an area. Gives the bad guys on the ground a little extra time to aim the SA-7 or later model hand held SAM.

It's still a good platform and will help them their efforts on the ground and help train Iraqi pilots at the same time.

If the Iraqi's don't buy Vipers down the road UAE has 70 modern Mirage 2000-5 and the advance 9 attack models for sale. Frances Total Oil & Gas Company I'm sure is or will be trying to get back in there. Maybe down the road some type of deal can be worked out. Iraqi's like their F1 Mirages years easier to maintain and less down time compared to other types in their fleet.

Those flight were important back then to launch anti-ship missiles defensless oil tankers.
