SAN DIEGO — Eleven Marines remain hospitalized and are expected to survive after a fatal rollover crash of a military truck at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, authorities said Sunday.
One Marine was killed and eight others were treated and released after the 7-ton truck — part of a six-vehicle convoy on regularly scheduled training — rolled over an embankment on the base Saturday.
The dead Marine was identified Sunday as Cpl. J. Gomez from Southern California. Base spokesman Maj. Todd Sudmeyer said Sunday that no other information was being released "to allow the family to grieve privately."
"The truck was moving along one of the dirt range roads, and the accident occurred just before a sharp turn in the road on a steep embankment," Sudmeyer said.
The MTVR, a medium tactical vehicle replacement for the 5-ton version, rolled over on an eastern portion of the San Diego County base. The injured, all members of Miramar's 4th Tank Battalion, were taken to local hospitals.
No names were released, but Sudmeyer said all of the families had been notified.
"Doctors expect all will make full recovery," Sudmeyer said.
Training at the base was suspended while the accident was being investigated, he said.
