That's how LA used to be 20 years ago, sans the acid rain. Now it's much cleaner which means the brown sky won't poison you as much. Shanghai will probably go down the same road once the govt realizes how much it would cost in healthcare to all those people who have inhaled dirty air for decades.

Just 10 years later,Beijing may be city in desert
Do chinese bureaucrats have will to deal with environmental pollution arising from economic growth?

I grew up in LA and I don't ever remember missing school because of acid rain... At least the US has had environmental laws (even if they were futile) enacted whereas China is more concerned about industrializing even if it is taking them to a dead end in terms of environmental health.

When I was 8 my family lived in Redondo Beach and there were days when schools were closed because the air pollution was too high. This was 1974-75.

ROFLMAO!! I grew up in Torrance!! I went to St. James Catholic School and graduated from West High School! Hey neighbor!!!

Glendale anyone? It's next to the verdugo mountains and la crescenta, the air isn't as bad but you can clearly see the brown haze on downtown LA from the hills on most days. There were a few days when i was a kid that the smog was so bad we had to stay inside(1995-96), but not anymore. Last time we couldn't go out was because of that huge brushfire a few years ago, and the sky was brown from the floating soot.

Anyway, there's still hope for the LA and China if the people want it. That's the most important thing. The next most important thing is how to achieve a better environment while making citizens do as little work as possible. As far as LA county is concerned, people don't like taking care of their town's own problems.

Unfortunetelly,Chinese people don't have enough knowledge and
objective and scientific thinking.

it is very evident that after several decades of being brainwashed, there is no way that people could utilize the rational and objective method to perceive the life. before American defeated japan in wwii, japanese really lost their capabilities of thinking except taking every order and demand from japanese emperor. it really should be remembered that without American democracy and sacrifice there will never be new japan.
