Are you talking about Captain SVEIN HEGLUND of 331 Squadron?

No, it's not him. Heglund is Norwegian.
I am looking for a Dane. He commanded No.331 Squadron from September 1942 to April 1943.

Though it doesn't quite look like one, is it an early version of a Messerschmitt 109?

No but very close.
Think about what comes before the 109 and as an extra hint it was made by Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG.
Which will tell you what its designator is.

It looks like the ME 108.
