I liked how your question was asked Tomtom, it required a bit more digging than putting a few key words in google.

Lt-Gen. Takuma Nishimura,
You are correct, to a point, I asked for the allied units involved. They were Australian 8th Division and the Indian 45th Infantry Brigade.

1. HMS Edinburgh
2. QP-11
3. U-456

She was carrying bullion from Russia to pay for its aid, most of the gold has been recovered, but there are still some 30 odd ingots missing, with the price of gold these days & modern technology it might be worth a shufti.

Spot on Partisan.

There were a lot of people up in arms about the recovery of the gold, as HMS Edinburgh is a war grave.

Very true, but that has never worried a govt when there are serious amounts of dosh to be had.

Anyway something nice and easy to keep the quiz flowing.

Originally formed in 1943, for a 1 off mission, this specialist unit pioneered the art of precision and are still in service today.

1. Who are they?
2. Name 3 of their code name weapons.
3. The unit motto.

1) 617 Squadron
2) Not sure what you mean by codename weapons, but the general terminology used were: Tall Boy, Grand Slam and Bouncing Bombs, more modern weapons include MBDA Storm Shadow cruise-missile and Sea Eagle Missile
3) Après moi le déluge "After me, the flood"

Perseus, not exactly my best framed question, I wanted to try and keep it simple without giving too much away.

You're spot on, although I realise that the bouncing bomb wasn't quite a code name bomb. Still I'll plead quiz master perogative.

The story of 617 Sqn has always entranced me, in many ways the broke the mould for bomber tactics, precision bombing, use of mosquito's, then mustangs to mark targets, all against RAF doctrine. I look forward to seeing how Peter Jackson treats the Sqn in his new film, due next year, time to dust off the old one & give it a blast.

So it's over to you.
