I think pound for pound, all immoralities aside, the Spartans were the best soldiers the world has ever seen. Best example of their skill is, of course, Thermopylae, where 300 Spartans led by King Leonidas fought off 250,000 (this number varies by your source, seen it go as low as 150,000 and as high as 1.7 million, but 250,000 seems to be the most commonly used figure) Persians under King Xerxes for nearly a week, killing more than 20,000 of them before they themselves were taken down to the last man, giving their Greek allies enough time to dig in and build up to the point where they could turn back the Persians. Now them are some elephant sized minerals if you ask me.

Just saying it again because no one seemed to notice the first time and I need validation.

Just thought I'd try and help get the original discussion going again.

Spartans were very good soldiers. Obvcours, the Parsians were crumy soldiers to start with.

I wouldn't say that, they conquered half the known world and had the Greeks on the run.
