The World's Armour king Al-khalid handed over to Pakistan Army

ISLAMABAD,: Vice Chief of Army Staff, Gen Mohammad Yousuf Khan, on Thursday presided over a ceremony to equip the Guides Cavalry with state-of-the-art indigenously produced tank Al-Khalid - MBT-2000.

While handing over the tank, Gen Yousuf Khan praised the efforts made by the Heavy Industries Taxila chairman, Maj-Gen Israr Ahmed Ghumman, and others involved in the project of Al-Khalid Tank, including the defence production division of the Ministry of defence.

He said the production of this tank was a landmark achievement. Al-Khalid tank is eqviilant of any modern tank of the world with an excellent power to weight ratio, enhanced firepower, high mobility, all-weather day and night capability, excellent protection and 125mm smooth gun.

The vice chief of the army staff emphasized the importance of learning all aspects of the new tank to optimize its potential in battle with regular maintenance to keep it battle ready at all times. He said the Guides Cavalry would in any future conflict attack with the same ferociousness as it had always done since its raising.

Armed with Al-Khalid tank, it would not only repeat its history but add new chapters in the annals of its glorious traditions. Another regiment of Al-Zarrar tank was also present in the ceremony along with other HIT(Heavy Industries Taxila) products like Baktar Shikan Carrier - Maaz - command post vehicle - Sakb - and APCs - Talah.

Earlier, on his arrival at the HIT, Gen Yousuf Khan was received by HIT chairman Maj-Gen Israr Ahmed Ghumman. He also reviewed the parade and took the general salute.

No dear Al-Khalid is totally a Pakistani made tank developed in HIT.
Al-Zarar is however the upgrade of Chinese Type 69 tank and now Al-Zarar has became an absoulotely new tank with 54Modifications to old type 69.

Isn't the Al-Khalid a joint production with the Chinese?

:) how dare you say that .... It's a indigenous production ... Even the nuts and bolts and made from the Iron that is mined in Pakistan ...

A development deal was signed with Pakistan in January 1990. Initial Chinese-built prototypes were tested in Pakistan in August 1991. Pakistan spent more than US$20 million over the next ten years on the co-development of a model suitable for their needs and on creating a capability to manufacture it locally. Lt Gen Hamid Javed as Director General of Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) and Brigadier (now Major General) Mohammad Asaad supervised the project. The design team modified the tank to accept a foreign-built power pack (engine). A number of different prototypes were evaluated.

An early version was armed with a Chinese gun and fire-control system, but had a German-designed MTU-396 diesel engine which was built under licence in China. Another version was equipped with a more advanced western digital fire-control system and powered by a Perkins 1,200 hp (890 kW) Condor diesel engine (as in the British Challenger) and SESM ESM500 automatic transmission (as in the French Leclerc). This version was considered too expensive and under-performing in the extreme heat of southern Pakistan. Finally, a version was tested with the compact Ukrainian 6TD-2 1,200 hp diesel engine (Ukraine also supplied Pakistan with T-80UD tanks, powered by a similar engine). This configuration was chosen for the production version of the tank and came to be known as Al-Khalid.

Yet another version—employing more western technology—had been envisaged as an export product for Pakistan. The prototype had a 1,200 hp (890 kW) German MTU-871/TCM AVDS-1790 diesel engine and an LSG-3000 transmission. But this concept was abandoned due to the arms embargo imposed on Pakistan after the 1998 Pakistani nuclear tests.

The final tank design resulting from a decade of co-operative development was designated Type 90-IIM. Chinese company Norinco showed the new Type 90-IIM during the March 2001 Abu Dhabi Defense Expo, under the export name MBT 2000.

The version powered by the Ukrainian power plant, intended for domestic production in Pakistan, was named Al-Khalid after Khalid ibn al-Walid, the prominent companion and general of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.

[edit] Production

During the development period, Heavy Industries Taxila gained experience building the Chinese Type 85-IIAP and prepared to begin production of the Al-Khalid tank in 1999. A pilot batch of fifteen tanks was inducted into the 31st Cavalry Regiment of Pakistan’s Armoured Corps on 20 July 2001. Pakistan signed a contract with Ukraine's Malyshev Factory in May 2002 for the delivery of 315 KMDB 6TD-2 diesel engines over three years.[5] An additional batch of Al-Khalid tanks was delivered on 23 September 2004. Pakistan plans to build a total of 600 Al-Khalid MBTs for its armed forces.[6]

The Saudi Arabian Army began conducting trials of the Al-Khalid's desert performance in April 2006, after expressing interest in purchasing a batch of the tank 2 years earlier. No order for the tank was placed.

Sword fish kindly add it to your knowledgeAn addition to your document. As you mentioned earlier that the Saudi Army has shown intrest but also you stated that no order was placed. Here is a statement from your own provided soursce the wikipedia.
"During the first week of May 2008, Lt-Gen Fonseka of the Sri Lanka Army held talks with his Pakistan Army counter-parts regarding the sale of military equipment, weapons and ammunition. The sale of 22 Al-Khalid MBTs to the Sri Lanka Army was finalised during these talks in a deal worth over US$100 million"

Lets see if I got this right..

The Type 90 tank is the same tank the Chinese showed off as MBT2000 but with a Ukranian powerplant?

If this is right..
In what aspect is this a Pakistani tank?

No The Al-Khalid has used many varities and you can't call it a chinese machine.
For instance the Engine is Ukranian,Fire control system Norinco, French thermal immaging device Catherine FC, the laser detection system and laser rane finders are made in by Pakistani company. Unlike many western and Soviet tanks Al-Khalid has used the mix of composite and ERA for it's protection purely made by Heavy Industries Taxila(HIT) Pakistan. The gun has been designed to fire Pakistani depleted Uranium shells.

Looks like a great tank indeed and will serve Pakistan's needs well and for many years. Having said that, I'm kind of hoping Pakistan could join (along with Azerbaijan) the Altay MBT project as well, which will be based on the South Korean XK-2 and will rank among the most advanced MBTs of the world, as XK-2 is already arguably "the best tank" out there. The project is still in design phase (with extensive cooperation between Turkey's Otokar and South Korea's ROTEM) and the first tank is expected to roll out around 2014.

so why 3 men crew?

Automatic loader for the 125 makes the human loader redundent. Of course it has the disadvantage of one less person for maintanance but thats life for you.

Very nice but unfortunatly impossible. Anyhow, I am sure it is a fine tank but I am afraid Alis patriotisem is driving him to make overstatements.

"King of Armor" is a crown best kept for designes that actually faced other modern designs, which unfortunatly currently includes exactly 0 of the modern tanks.
