On the other hand, looking at the Library of Congress' Photochromes I've come to the conclusion that those are "colorized" black&white images.

I've gotten most of the color images the French took in WWI and built a site - in my spare time - with the images. Got linked from Wikipedia, somehow, and the hits went through the roof.
