India fails to evoke any strong feelings from other countries in the world, a new poll for the BBC suggests.

The survey for the BBC World Service asked how 39,435 people in 33 nations across the globe saw various countries.

On an average, 41% of the people polled did not say whether India had a positive or negative influence.

The poll found Iran having a negative influence in the world, while Japan is most widely seen to have a positive influence.

BBC World Service Poll

The survey by the international polling firm GlobeScan and the University of Maryland took place between October 2005 and January 2006.

Mixed response

The results on India's influence in the world are mixed, with most deciding not to answer one way or another.

On average, 35% of the people polled said India had a positive influence, while 24% believed it has a negative influence.

"Many more countries (22) countries gave it [India] a net positive rating (6), but nearly all of these are plurality positions (20 positive, 5 negative)," the poll said.

Two countries, Iran and Afghanistan, overwhelmingly voted to say India had a positive influence in the world.

In Iran, 71% had a positive view of India. In Afghanistan, 59% believed the same.

The only country with widespread negative view about India's influence is the Philippines with 57% voting "mainly negative".

Interestingly, Sri Lanka is upbeat about its big neighbour - 49% had a positive view, while only 4% were negative.

India's nuclear-armed neighbour Pakistan was not in the list of countries polled.

The poll found European countries divided about India.

Great Britain and Russia turned up most positive with over 47% having a positive view of India in the two countries.

France and Finland viewed India most negatively - both being 44% negative and 27% positive.

Nearly half of Indians have a favourable view of their country

The US leans slightly positive towards India -39% had a positive view, while 35% thought negatively.

The poll found that Indians themselves were the "most tepid or modest in their self-estimates".

While in most countries a large majority give their country a positive rating, the picture is different in India.

Only 47% of Indians had a positive view of their country. Only 10% had a negative view.

A total of 1452 people above 18 years of age were polled in India.
The margin of error in polling ranged from 2.5% to 4%.

How Different Countries View Indian's Influence

Iran , Afganistan Voting In India's Favour is a Natural Reaction we Share a Very Close Cultural Bonding With Both Countries Even though Both are Muslim Countries ............ There are religious as well Political reasons For that as well ;).

And Good To Know Finland has Discovered India :D .......... I have no Idea why they have a Negative View but at least the Santa's neighbourhood Knows that we are In the Same planet ........... Want to Elobrate on this ArmyJaeger :read: ?

Philippines I have no Idea why they have the Most Negative Feelings ?

Filipinos will only hate India. Losing your call centre job to an Indian would evoke that kind of hatred obviously. Pity, lol.
Brazilians(US supporting India on the nuclear front and not Brazil), Filipinos(call centre and IT) are jealous of India because of the recent boom, as we are of China, at least I am.

Views of China have deteriorated sharply over the last year, but a plurality continues to view China positively in the world. Among the 20 countries polled both years, the number rating China mainly positively has dropped from 13 countries in 2004 to eight today, while those rating it negatively have risen from three countries to seven. On average, positive ratings of China have dropped 9 points.

What is most striking is the change that has occurred among European countries and Canada. While in 2004 four of the seven European countries polled plus Canada had a plurality with a positive view of China, today only one country—Spain—still has a plurality positive view. France’s positive rating dropped from 49 percent to 31 percent while a majority of 53 percent now view China negatively.

Italy’s positive rating dropped from 42 percent to 22 percent, and a 55 percent majority now have a negative view. Positive views dropped in Great Britain (46% to 40%) and Canada (49% to 36%), with pluralities now having a negative view.

Views in Russia also worsened—positive views dropping from a plurality positive of 42 percent to a divided 32 percent positive, 33 percent negative. Finland—polled for the first time—also came in 54 percent negative.

Negative shifts also occurred in Asia, most notably in South Korea. In 2004 South Koreans had been divided on China (49% positive, 47% negative), while currently a 58 percent majority views China negatively. Drops in positive ratings have also occurred in India (66% to 44%), the Philippines (70% to 54%), Australia (56% to 43%) and Indonesia (68% to 60%), but in all of these cases a plurality or majority are still positive.

Steven Kull comments, “While in the past many may have assumed that China was on an inevitable path to increasing liberalization, the new President Hu Jin Tao has clearly proven not to be China’s Gorbachev. Recent stories of tightening of state controls appear to have hurt China’s image in the world.”

Nonetheless, on balance, China still has considerably more countries holding a positive than a negative view of it. Of the 33 countries polled this year, 20 have a positive view (12 majorities, 8 pluralities) and only ten have a negative view (5 pluralities and 5 majorities). On average 45 percent gave China a positive rating and 27 percent a negative rating.

Positive views are particularly widespread in Africa—especially Senegal (73% positive), Nigeria (68%), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (59%), Kenya (59%) and Tanzania (53%). Majority positive views were also found among a number of Muslim countries—Iran (66%), Afghanistan (58%), Iraq (55%), Saudi Arabia (54%), and Indonesia (60%). Positive majorities were also found in Brazil (57%) and the Philippines (54%).

Finland is Still on the Negative Side :thumb: (Finland is the Country to watch out here Because they were Polling for the First time )

Well, I hope they enjoy their lives when they're all ruled by China. :p

Have you ever noticed your Public Relations Dept. sounds much better when you jail/kill those that disagree with the gov't?

Oh things must be just great in China, look at their videos, no one protesting like in the bad old US where they're obviously discontent.

What difference does this poll really make? I wonder what the demographics of those polled are? What does it really reveal?
The whole premise of the world as a popularity contest is suspect in my mind.
The fact the radical Islam hates a successful Christian country is nothing new. Look to the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, then to the main zones of conflict: Spain, from which the descendants of the Moors were eventually expelled; the Middle East, where Crusaders and Muslims clashed for years; and the Balkans, where even very distant memories spurred atrocities even into the twentieth century.
I believe it's not a case of America becoming unpopular, it's more a case of us becoming the latest and largest Christian target of opportunity for radical Islamists. Now ponder if you will how each of those historic clashes have been resolved. Just my 2 cents folks.

Those who have money, power and "the good life" are always hated by those who don't. The negative veiw of the U.S. is driven more by envy than any other single factor.

A much more realistic appraisal of a country is the ratio of foreigners who wish to enter a country versus natives who wish to leave. I see no significant egress from the U.S., but I do clearly see a truly massive ingress.

Unfortuntely American unpopularity isnt just in the Muslim World, if it was that we could just demiss it a just a conflict of cultures. Unfortunely we have countries whose cultures are similar to ours that dont think very much of us either. And worse while this destain verys from simply disagreement to absolute hatred the troubling thing you can find across the globe. We need a long period of introspection (espically our Foreign and Trade policies) in relationship to other countries. And first and foremost we need stop believeing that this is 1945 and that everybody loves us, that era is long gone.

Jelousy is not just it. Its issues like Isreal, its unfair trade policies, its US support for dictators such as Saudi Arabia, immigration has nothing to do with it. For every immigrant there are thousands that stay home.

mmarsh, I think that we've already moved on in that respect. More and more I find that Americans are caring less and less about what others think of us. It's just business, which America is very good at. If you need what we sell, buy it and the same holds true that if we need what they sell, we'll buy that.
I know that's an over simplification but, the point is that it's my observation that Americans have already tired of trying to please the world, and are quickly tiring of always trying to pay for every misfortune that happens to strike anywhere on earth. I think the guilt trip is wearing really thin. We're tired of poeple calling us all fat, lazy, loudmouthed, a-holes, and more just because we're Americans.
No mmarsh you're right it's not 194(whatever) anymore and we don't have to come to the rescue anymore, unless it is in our own best interest to do so.
BTW, we also realize that we were not overly appreciated in the 1940's either. Many of your new countrymen didn't exactly throw the GIs a welcoming party as the Germans were being pushed out of France. That veil of fantasy about WWII was long since been taken down too.

to me and many others, France and in general Europeans are worse than China or former soviet union or any other evil country.

These polls are absurd and piece of nonesense.

Hi,

America because People were So conserned About it :)

usa5ll.png

With Iran included in this year’s poll, it has displaced the US as the nation with the most countries giving it a negative rating. The poll shows that the US has lost ground in some key allied countries. Among the 20 nations polled in 2004 as well as this year, on average positive ratings have dropped five points; ratings have significantly declined in 10 of these tracking countries (including the US) while significantly improving in only five.

Within Europe there has been a hardening of negative attitudes toward America compared to a year ago. Those expressing a negative view have risen in France (from 54% to 65%), and Great Britain (50% to 57%) and in Italy a plurality of 46 percent now has a negative view of the US (only 34% positive) as compared to 2004 when 49 percent had a positive view and only 40 percent had a negative view. Negative views have also increased in China (from 42% to 62%), in Australia (from 52% to 60%) and in Brazil (from 51% to 60%). Interestingly, no more Iranians were negative about the US role in the world than Germans or French (each with 65% negative).

But there have also been some positive trends. In Russia, negative views are down from 63 percent to 52 percent and in Turkey, from 62 percent to 49 percent. In Poland, positive attitudes expressed by 52 percent in 2004 have risen to 62 percent.

With the addition of new countries to the current poll, especially African countries that see the US positively, the total number of countries giving the US a negative rating (18) is only modestly more than the number giving it a positive rating (13), with Saudi Arabia equally divided and the US not counted. On average across all these countries, views are evenly divided with 40 percent seeing the US role as positive and 41 percent negative.

I wonder what the demographics of those polled are? What does it really reveal?

Polling was conducted from October 2005 to January 2006 with a total sample of 39,435 people. In 5 of the 33 countries, the sample was limited to major urban areas. The margin of error per country ranges from +/-2.5 to 4%. For more details, please see the Methodology or visit www.pipa.org.

My friend, I trhink you are deluding yourself. Jealousy and envy is 99 percent of it!

What is wrong with out policy towad Isreal? Should we continue Hitler's work and help the mohammadens eliminate the Jews once and for all?

Unfair trade policies? When we bend over backwards to be fair, and allow every two bit socialist country like France to take advantage of us?

And yes, Immigration has everything to do with it. Ninety percent of the world's population would live in the USA if they could.

Hi,

Let's See Iran

iran6ir.png

In 24 of the 33 countries polled, majorities (in 14 countries) or pluralities (in 10) say that Iran is having a negative influence in the world. In five other countries a plurality says that Iran is having a positive influence, but in three of these the proportion who say this is less than a third. On average across the 33 countries just 18 percent say Iran is having a positive influence while 47 percent say Iran is having a negative influence.

Countries in Europe and North America have the largest majorities expressing a negative view of Iran. The most negative are Germany (84%), the US (81%), and Italy (77%); followed by Finland (74%), Great Britain (72%), Canada (73%), France (68%), Spain (66%) and Poland (60%).

Latin America is mostly negative. Majorities in Brazil (75%) and Argentina (53%) have a negative view of Iran’s influence, but Mexicans are divided (22% positive, 21% negative) with one in three not taking a position.

The only countries with a significant plurality expressing a positive view of Iran are Afghanistan (47%) and Indonesia (39%). Three other countries had small pluralities expressing a favorable view but with most not taking a position—Senegal (31%), Saudi Arabia (24%) and Sri Lanka (21%).

Steven Kull, director of PIPA says, “Iran may imagine that there are many people out there rooting for it as it defies the big powers with its nuclear program. But this poll suggests that the number of people behind it is quite small and swamped by much larger numbers who are worried about the direction Iran is going.”[/b]

Views of Britain were found to be quite positive, slipping only slightly from a year ago primarily due to dips in positive feelings among South Africans and Filipinos. Positive views of Britain plummeted in South Africa from 67 percent in 2004 to 41 percent, and in the Philippines from 57 percent to 39 percent.

Among all countries polled this year, 26 have a positive view of Britain’s influence—11 a majority and 15 a plurality. Just five have a negative view (3 majorities, 2 pluralities). On average 47 percent have a positive view of Britain and 25 percent a negative view.

The most negative countries are Muslim countries—Iran (66% negative), Iraq (57%) and Turkey (41% negative, 17% positive). However, Indonesia is positive (53%) as is Afghanistan (47%) and especially Nigeria (75%). Saudi Arabia is divided.
Two Latin American countries are negative— Argentina (51%) and Mexico (36% negative, 15% positive). But Brazil leans positively (49% to 29%).
All other countries are positive on Britain’s role. Especially positive are the US (71%), Poland (72%), South Korea (75%), Ghana (67%) and Nigeria (75%).
