A world first: Vaccine helps prevent HIV infection     (AP)
AP - For the first time, an experimental vaccine has prevented infection with the AIDS virus, a watershed event in the deadly epidemic and a surprising result. Recent failures led many scientists to think such a vaccine might never be possible.

Ahhh, Statistics, such marvellous things.

74 of those 8000+ who took the placebo developed HIV/AIDS, and of the group who took the drug 51 of 8000+ were infected. a grand total of 125 infections in 16,000 participants, infection rates of 0.925% and 0.637%

In such a large sample a difference of 0.288% is hardly anything to get excited about when one takes into account the randomness of the participants sexual activity.
