American tennis star Venus Williams is the latest high-profile casualty to withdraw from the upcoming US Open with injury.

The two-time winner of the tournament at Flushing Meadow has failed to overcome a persistent left wrist injury.

Williams won the Grand Slam event in 2000 and 2001 and had been hopeful of recovering from her current wrist ailment in time to take part.

However, the former world No.1 vowed to return to her home tournament in 2007.

"I will miss the excitement of competing in front of the New York fans and look forward to returning in 2007," she told the BBC.

Williams had been due to play Poland's Marta Domachowska in the first round.
