Whats your ethnic background?

Wrong.
Nationality is not the same as citizenship.
Your nationality can be Kurdish but your citizenship cannot be Kurdish since no Kurdish state exists.
Turks who are German citizens can be the same nationality as Turks who are Turkish citizens as long as they consider themselves Turks first before they are German (if at all).

Here is one that says I am right:

The US is made up of many ethnic groups American Indians, Asians, Caucasians, Blacks, Hispanic etc...

Some Nations can be made up of one ethnic group, but Nations are often made up of multiple ethnic groups.

And this topic is about Ethnicity. Not citizenship or Nationality.

Ethnic background meaning Caucasian, Asian, Indian, etc.. or in some cases, stupid.
The original poster could have meant Nationality, but they would have to clarify.

USA, Korean, British, Canadian, French are not ethnic groups. (I expect the Irish to argue, but that is part of their Nationality not their Ethnicity).

US Nationals(citizens) are not all Caucasians.

The question in the Title of this thread is; What your ethnic background.

If I say I am an American, have I answered the question?

What's ethnicity worth anyway??? It dosen't determine a person's capability to perform, plus it can't get you places, promotions, love or money...we're pretty much screwed :)

The first definition on your source is actually wrong. That is a very common use of the word "nationality" but it is in fact not the accurate way to use it.
Hence the term Nation-State. It is when a Nation and a State fulfill each other. For example, South Korea would be one of the closest things to a Nation-State. Iraq would not be a Nation-State since there are different Nationalities present within that state.
State would refer to a soverign entity that involves population and land and would be the ultimate authority of that area and people... so it's actually different from the American usage of the word "state" which would be more like provinces or autonomous provinces.

If you answered "American" to nationality, you would have answered the question.
If you answered "American" to ethnicity, you would not have answered the question.

Sky2979 is right on the button, ethnicity does not contribute anything to a person's worth and character, that much I agree.

As I said, my dad is Pakistani, and my mom is Indonesian, but my ethnic group is listed as Malay in my NRIC, I am not bothered by that, because I know what I am and who I am. What count most is the person you are.

None of your sources indicate that the first definition is wrong. They don't specifically say citizenship is part of being a Nation, they also do not say it isn't part of it.

But since you fully agree with me that Nationality is not the same as Ethnicity, there is no need to debate all the different definitions of Nationality.

If you answered American, to nationality, you would have answered the question.
If you answered American, to ethnicity, you would not have answered the question.

It is very refreshing to see you agree so fully with me for a change.

The topic here is: Whats your ethnic background?

I think you have spelled out my point very accurately in your statement:

If you answered American, to nationality, you would have answered the question.
If you answered American to ethnicity, you would not have answered the question.

Thank you so much for your total agreement on the difference between Ethnicity and and Nationality.

I am a member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation of Oklahoma - meaning I’m Native American (with a lot of Irish in the mix).
