I'm wondering about that because they both mean the same in German. Do they mean the same in English or is there a difference like with 'beef' and 'meat' which do mean the same in German, too?

I guess they are the same. I mean the Statue of Liberty (a gift from France (i think), get that! lol) stands for our freedom, correct?
