Modern-day terrorists don't scare me - I have an exponentially higher chance of dying by a car, or of heart disease than ever being in a terror attack. It must have been REALLY scary knowing those psychos had nukes aimed at you for half a century!

1935. Same birthday year as Elvis. He got famous before me (I am a great fan except for most of the films) but he has left the building, whereas I am still rocking hard. When I was first in LA Hank Williams was the big noise.

Very Well Redneck, like it was yesterday. The London blitz, my home recieved a direct hit, which took it out of the street like a tooth extraction. My next home was destroyed WITH the whole street by a parachute land mine.

I was evacuated without my folks at just 4 years to a village in Somerset, at the farm home of the village blacksmith and carpenter. I was friends with, and met daily over long periods, the guys at the Canadian army camp, the segregrated black American units (great guys) and of course the white American units, who used to feed me in the canteen, and i took them a yesterday's newspaper. Fantastic times. These guys were waiting for D-Day and they were here to rescue me and save my life. I never forgot that, ever. I remember them well. I was away from my home and family from 4-9 years, so you can understand why I am always prepared to stand alone for what I believe is right. And why I love America.

God, I'm glad guys like you are still blessing us with your longevity. I was fortunate to know a lot of WWII vets and I am richer for it.

And, TI, I saw Patton in a drive-in theater, I wish those were still around.

I keep promising myself that as soon as I can get my old black and white pictures of pre WW11 & WW11 I will post them on here for interest. With my mum at outbreak, in a tin helmet in the backyard of one of the houses that were destroyed, my uncle Fred with mates under the big guns of HMS HOOD etc.

' Empire of the Sun' - I've always somehow missed that film, but we did sometimes have Italian POWs working in our village fields, under escort. I knew a number of guys who spent 5 years in Jap POW camps, like my WO11 boss in the army, and we had folk like a mother in Birmingham who lost FOUR sons in those camps. I can tell you that the WW11 Japs were well and truly hated here.

Someone on this forum once wondered why they never seemed these days to get such a bad press as the Germans, and the answer of course, lies in the retribution of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Somehow that would appear to bring about closure to an extent.
