What would be the best vehicle for jungle fighting?

i know that it would be very hard for tanks to fight in jungles/rainforests, so lets just consider AFVs! And let's say your troops just came from boot camp with zero combat experience and for some idiotic reason is assigned to hunt-down terrorists in a jungle environment! :p

Any tank or AFV can be Very effective in jungle warfare provided that the substrate can support the weight of the vehicle.

A way to use a tank is by using surface burst High Explosives to clear the vegetation. But it must be realized that, in the jungle, tank movements are largely confined to roads or trails. In thick jungle, tanks can do little or nothing to hold up the enemy, but in more open country they can impose considerable delay, either by counterattacking or by threatening the head of his column.

The scenario you mention is ridiculous. You can have the world's most advanced AFV but if it is operated by untrained personnel, it is useless.

You get off your fat ass and utilise the appendages at the ends of your legs.
Surface burst high explosives only serve to make a greater entanglement.
Seen it. Jungles are not necessarily flat.
Possibly a few low yield thermo nucs, but then you don't need the tanks.

The AUstralian Army employed tanks (Centurions) with good effectiveness in Vietnam. Look up the Battle of FSB Coral. APCs did alright at he Battle of Long Tan, as well.

The attack on a fortified position in a jungle with fire support from a tank is done this way:

First you fire surface burst HE to clear the vegetation then delayed action HE to break up the front of now vissible position and finally solid AP rounds to enable the infantry to advance close behind a curtain of supporting fire without undue fear of casualties from friendly shell burst.

Seen it, done it and it works.

Also on Tarakan Island in May 1945. Matilda tanks of the 2/9th Armoured Regiment fought the Japanese in tangled, swampy jungle, were suicide attacks by enemy infantry men were a constant threat.

My vote for best vehicle goes to one of the more recent ICBMs or cruise missiles, as they avoid all the problems associated with other forms of jungle warfare.

Too true. My unit has Tarakan as a Battle Honour on our Standard.
