Put it this way, bears are pretty decent climbers also. I don't recommend going up if you are talking about a black bear.

Let's put it this way: So you're being chased by a bear and you decide to climb a tree to get away. (Bad idea.) If the bear climbs up after you, it's a black bear. If it just shakes the tree until you fall out, it's a grizzly.
