I don't know what happened to my granddads medals from WW1, I wish I did.

They were made of different stuff in those days. My granddad was only 4 feet 11 inches tall, but he'd fight anyone no matter how big they were. Maybe it's because he was Irish. I think his rifle with bayonet fixed was taller then he was.

Too true!
Though Walter had a proper prosthetic leg made for him, he prefered to use the peg leg instead, especially when gardening, he would use it as a seed drill!
He worked untill 70. He was given a job as a signal man with the railways after loosing his leg.
Nothing would hold him back.

My granddad lost his sense of smell when he was gassed in the trenches. In his shed in the garden he thought he had a can of paraffin to help light his pot belly stove. He poured a bit on the wood and lit it, WOOOFFFF, it was a can of petrol! He came out of the shed with singed eyebrows cursing and swearing, but because people couldn't help but laugh it made him even more annoyed. He was one hell of a character.

He died well into his 80's when I was 17, I still miss him today.
