What Are You Listening To Right Now

The subtitles are horrendously off mark, I guess somebody has passed the Latin through the Google translator...

Apart from this, great tune and great opera!

I don't speak Latin, and yes! It is really good, I am listening to Orff when I am in the mood for.....never mind :)

Ravel´s orchestrated version of Modest Mussorkgskie´s "Pictures at an Exhibition". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pictures_at_an_Exhibition

A series of melodies (a suite) and dances that always had me fascinated since I heard it (before the classical acts) interpreted by Emerson, Lake and Palmer in my adolescence and that - later as a photographer - made me work for three years to create a diaporama from this music with the help of my photography scholars here in Mallorca 1987 (mix of ELP and classical interpretations) to reverse the music back to pictures. It resulted to become my second true work of art (of two) I have ever managed (sorry, not digitalized, you will have to visit me to see it on projection screen with the original diapositives and 4 projectors).

As you can imagine, during this work I got to know every little tweak in the music, the tunes, the layout and the interpretations, for anyone wanting to know more about classical music I can only recommend to listen to it (the whole suite, of course) at least three times (you probably wont like it the first time, the second you will get the gist, and the thrid time you will be addicted).

Here one of the tunes, the culmination of the suite towards the end, "Great Gates of Kiev", in various interpretations:

Mussorgsky first (the original piano piece, performed by Horowitz as only he could do it, tech wizard he was, the most vivid interpretation of the whole suite I have ever heard on piano: The title of the vid is misleading, it was no transcription, it is the original... NOTE: Great Gtes starts a little later into the vid - 3:20 - , another piece of the suite before, "Hut of Baba Yaga"), 2nd the orchestrated version as by Ravel, and for the fun of it the ELP version that changed my view on music 4 decades ago, third...

Funny thing is, even if it does not appear so at first glance (listening) they all follow the partiture note by note (with the exception of Keith Emersons little push-the-moog-around interlude)... If you stop the vids at certain characteristic points and listen to the others to that point you will see they are all identically note wise...

Enjoy!

I probably posted this before (I contribute to - and run - a lot of musical threads and sometimes lose the big pic in the course), but here something that had me moved a lot in the late 80s/early 90s when I was out of town on my photo journalist trips, sometimes for month in a row, thinking about (and longing for) my Lady at home (after a quick and expensive telephone conversation - something I never liked).

Surely sang it uncounted times with the band whenever it appeared on the radio (those guys know to put it on in the early morning hours when only truckers, law enforcement or travelling journos are out there on the road), my song for the guys out there fearing "Joey" and thinking home:

NOTE: To get an idea about what I felt/feel you really have to crank it up to the speakers limits, especially so if you are in love and geographically separated...!

I spent the whole night long
On my quarter phone...
... a letter's too long... :(
Don't you know?

We talked, we laughed and sighed
Kissing the air, said good-bye...

I'm never the first to
Hangup the phone,
I´d rather kiss instead...!

But isn't this
Just the way we live...?

I might be kissing the sheets
I might be hugging the pillow
All night long
But I don't mind
Cause I have you on my mind.

I might be kissing the sheets
I might be hugging the pillow,
All night long,
But I don't mind
'Cause I have you on my mind
All night long,
I don't mind,
'Cause I'll kiss in time

It's time,
my plane has arrived,
I take a slow step inside...
How time has passed by
(Don't you know)
We only had a day,
We say hello,
Who can stay?
I'm glad we had this day anyway...

We'd rather kiss instead!!

But isn't this just
The way we live
...?

I might be kissing the sheets
And I might be hugging the pillow
All night long
But I don't mind
´Cause Ill have you on my mind

I might be kissing the sheets
And I might be hugging the pillow
All night long
... I don't mind
'Cause I'll kiss in time

I might be kissing the sheets
(Ain´t this the way we live...?)
I might be hugging the pillow
(Ain´t this the way we live...?)
All night long
But I don't mind
'Cause I have you on my mind
All night long
(Ain´t this the way we live...?)
I don't mind
'Cause I have you on my mind
(Ain´t this the way we live...?)

Funny thing is that I so many years later still feel the same with this song...

Well, looks like as this here coffee machine still needs some fixing... :)

Enjoy,

Shame, I'm really sorry Hawky! :( My thoughts are with you and the families involved...

I... could not watch all of that.

The impact on the human body... Christ almighty.

I don't know the details of what happened to her... but... I hope it was quick and painless.

They are messy; I posted it because of the music and please drive safely so we can reduce things like this. Cars have killed friends to me too
